There were 3 Board Initiated Projects during the 2011 grant cycle.

Project-Grant #: 11-33 David Darlington, Environmental Education for Kids! (EEK!), Livermore, East County, $40,000.00 - The EEK! Program’s primary goal is to expose students to the issues of solid waste and to give them the power to reduce and divert as much of their solid waste from the landfill while at school and at home.  This grant will provide funding for 210 classroom presentations reaching 5,000 students.

Project-Grant #: 11-34 Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), OUSD Green Glove Waste Reduction Program, Oakland, West County, $43,720.00 - This proposal builds on the lessons learned from the districts previous efforts and over the next three years will create a sustainable, effective, district wide waste reduction program.  A school Board policy to achieve 75% diversion from landfills by 2015 and a 90% reduction by 2020 will provide the foundation for this effort.  The Green Gloves Waste Reduction Program creates a framework for standardizing waste reduction efforts across OUSD.

Project-Grant #: 11-35 StopWaste.org, Sustainability Intern Program, Oakland, West County, $28,500.00 - With these funds, StopWaste.org staff will hire and place interns in the EAB’s designated city/school district and will incorporate those interns into the agency’s existing intern training program.

The total 2011 Expenditure Plan budget of $102,500 for Board Initiated grants was approved by the Board along with the option to carry over all unexpended funds from previous grant years and expend if necessary.  Funds from previous years were expended, and a total of $112,220.00 in Board Initiated grants were awarded.
